Guglhupf Café + Biergarten | Durham, NC
David has been the head chef at Guglhupf Café + Biergarten for the past 10 years, first to establish dinner service and then to help grow this local business into the neighborhood fixture it is today.
David began cooking in Chapel Hill in 1994, working for the legendary Bill Smith at Crook’s Corner. He then headed west, working primarily under acclaimed chef Jan Birnbaum. He found his way back to the Triangle, beginning his executive chef career in 2000 and finding himself at the helm of local institutions like Acme, 411 West and Watts Grocery.
David joined the Guglhupf family in 2009, putting his mark on the daytime menu and crafting the menu for the newly established dinner service. In 2018, as Guglhupf turned 20, David worked with owner Claudia Cooper to expand the menu with classic biergarten options and add a full-service bar. Outside of the kitchen, David spends time with his daughter, Ruby, plays guitar and hangs out with his dog, Ike.
